Evaluating and Assessment

Auckland Art Gallery – Toi o Tāmaki
Exhibition

  • There were a variety of art works by both New Zealand and International artists.
  • We each found something that we liked at the art gallery
  • It was a very visual experience
  • We felt very cautious, had a library feel to it
  • It was a quiet atmosphere and you could take your time
Creative Learning Centre
  • We liked how the creative learning centre looked but felt like it was too small
  • We liked the “Blue Reminds Me Of…” wall
  • The room was bright and colourful which was stimulating and encouraging to be creative
  • Open and welcoming, but the positioning of the room entrance was sort of hidden away
 What we thought:
  • It’s not really noticeable until we sat down and noticed a sign; the room was tucked away into a corner
  • We weren’t sure if you had to pay or if it was free to go in, as you had to walk into the area to see what was inside.
  • We expected it to be more of what we expected an art class to look like (more art materials, paint, paper etc.)

Community Centres in Auckland
  • There were more art related activities in South Auckland compared with West and North Auckland
  • Many of the art related activities appeared to be adult related or during times in which children were at school
  • Much of the child related activities are during the holiday programs
  • We thought the activities were more for primary aged children.
  • Had dance and drama classes for children compared with the art classes
Orakei Community Centre
  • Near Mission Bay, Okahu Bay, Remuera, Parnell, Meadowbank and Waitemata Harbour
  •  Has many events for a diverse range of people in the community centre itself.
  • Has an art program called PicassoKids (There is also one in Onehunga)
  • The program is early childhood aged children (18 months to 5 years)
  •  Reasonably priced $5 casual and $35 for 9 weeks/term. Also has family discounts and seems affordable.
  • Seems popular as it’s a regular event
  •  Has a play, chat and coffee after each session – way to meet people in the community, create playdates, friends, etc.

Survey and Children's Comments
  • Many people thought that the visual arts are important, many believing that it held tremendous amount of importance
  • One of the main reasons for the importance of art was the development of creativity
  • Many people did drawing or painting with their children
  • Most people spent time with their family and friends, often going to places that were free such as the park and the mall
  • Most people had gone to the Art Gallery but also a lot of people did not go to any art events. One person's reason for this was that it was too expensive.
  • A large majority of people did not know of any upcoming art events
  • Most people would consider going to a free art programme or event
  • Many of the children did like art and did art at home
  • Often the things they did on the weekend involved going to places such as the park

Questions and Thoughts:

  •  Should there be more inclusion of early childhood education art related activities?
  • Should art galleries be “child-friendly” ?
  • Should art galleries be quiet (atmosphere)?
  • Rooms to hire – Could these be used for anything?
  • Why is there more art related activities in South/ Central Auckland?
  • Whose responsibility is it for children to be engaged in art?
  • Is it the communities responsibility to create art experiences?
  • Why do children only seem to do visual arts at home or at school?
